Although it is almost fall and time for kids to return to school, many places are still enduring the dog days of summer. Finding ways to keep baby cool and entertained can be a challenge, especially if you are bored with the great indoors.
Stroll Around
You may be stuck inside when temperatures are soaring, but you don’t have to be stuck at home. If you live near a mall, take baby for a long stroll. The walking and window-shopping will give you an energy boost, and the new sights and sounds will give baby much needed stimulation.
If a mall isn’t an option, a big grocery store or super-center works, too!
Indoor Playgrounds
Some malls and restaurants have indoor playgrounds with toddler areas that are perfect for mom and baby. This is a great mid-morning option. After your baby wakes from her morning nap, pack a snack and a nursing blanket (or bottle), and head for the playground. You will be able to enjoy adult conversation with other mommies, and babies get to scoot around or watch other infants and toddlers unfettered.
Before you know it, it will be time for lunch and another nap!
Playgroups
Playgroups are another great way to break up the monotony. Schedule a weekly playdate with other mommies, and rotate hosting in your homes. This gives you all an opportunity to share parenting tips and praise milestones without having to spend money. Also, having an activity to look forward to can help cut through the doldrums on other days.
If you don’t know other mommies, check your local PTA to see whether there is an Early Childhood PTA for newborns to 5. Your neighborhood elementary school or church is another great place to find moms.
Go With the Flow
Sometimes what bores you completely enthralls your baby. Don’t miss signals from baby. If she is content lying on the living room floor, sucking her feet, don’t stop her! Lay down next to her with a book or magazine and enjoy being together.
Likewise, if she is acting fussy and frustrated, don’t force an activity. Changing the scenery sometimes helps, but there are plenty of times when baby just needs a good cry. Let her. As long as she is safe, fed, dry and checked on, you can let her have some cry time while you take care of dishes or make lunch.
