Baby shampoos and lotions are big business.
As Mommies, we are very particular about anything involving our children. We want to be certain that everything that goes into and onto their bodies is the safest and healthiest possible.
With many products on the market, shopping for the “right” products can be exasperating. Marketing gimmicks, like cartoon characters and celebrity endorsements create a smokescreen, blinding us to the real pros and cons of the products: where they were made and with what ingredients.
Read product labels.
The best rule of thumb when shopping for baby lotion and wash is to check the ingredients for harmful chemicals, like parabens, as well as the location of manufacture. If it doesn’t say “Made in the USA,” it isn’t.
Personal and Baby care products are regulated by the FDA, regardless of where they are manufactured. In order for a product to be distributed in the USA, the distributor (often the manufacturer) must comply with FDA regulations regarding labeling. This means location of manufacture, ingredients and warnings must be conspicuously and clearly displayed on the exterior and interior packaging.
USA Safety Regulations
From the safe harvest of raw products to the cleanliness of the factory that turns raw material into the finished product and right down to the type of packaging used, United States agencies regulate virtually every aspect of baby products. Perhaps one of the most fundamental benefits of buying something made in the US is proximity. If something goes awry in production, inspectors can easily investigate the source and protect the public from widespread harm.
Personal care items produced outside of the United States are not necessarily manufactured according to lower standards. However because the USA has high regulatory standards, it can always ease Mommy’s mind to buy products from the United States therefore not having to worry about where the products came from.
