Teeth and Gums 101

October 11, 2009

Caring for your baby’s gums and teeth starts at birth. That’s right: Even before his pearly whites poke through, it’s important to start a basic dental routine. Here’s how:

Before Teeth

Care for your newborn’s gums by keeping them clean. Use a finger brush or a soft, clean washcloth to gently wipe off his gums with water. Do this twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime. Your early effort will pay off: If your baby gets used to something touching his gums now, brushing his teeth later on won’t be a struggle.

Baby Teeth

As soon as that first tooth appears—usually one of the bottom middle teeth, between 4 and 6 months—it’s time to brush! Brushing keeps bacteria from sticking to your baby’s teeth. Should you use toothpaste? Many experts recommend using just water or fluoride-free toothpaste for kids under 2, especially if fluoride is added to the local water supply. But double check with your pediatrician. Here are some more pointers for brushing up:

·        Brush twice daily with a soft infant toothbrush (run it under warm water first to soften the bristles).

·        Brush his tooth (or teeth) in small circular motions. Lift his lip to brush the gum line as well. Use gentle strokes so that you don’t scratch his gums or tooth enamel.

·        Start gently flossing his teeth once he has two that are side by side.

·        When your child is old enough to spit out—and not swallow—the toothpaste (usually around 2 or 3 years old), you can use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Time to See a Dentist

Your pediatrician will care for your baby’s teeth and gums for the first year. After that, he should start seeing a pediatric dentist. At the checkup, the dentist will look into your child’s mouth for any early signs of plaque buildup and decay as well as make sure his teeth and mouth are developing properly.
