Bonding With Your Baby

July 31, 2009

The special bond you share with your baby begins the moment you meet. And while some parents feel an instant connection with their newborn, it can take others a little longer. Either way, your attachment to your baby will grow stronger as you spend more time together. Truth is, bonding doesn’t require any special moves on your part. The things you’re probably already doing to take care of her—feeding, bathing, and soothing—help create a unique connection. Here are everyday ways to bond with your beautiful new bundle.

  • Gaze into her eyes during feedings. Mealtime is the perfect opportunity to lock eyes with your baby. It doesn’t matter if you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding; it’s the quality one-on-one time that counts. While you cradle her in your arms, make eye contact and talk softly to give her a sense of comfort.

  • Get skin-on-skin contact at bath time. Your baby has your undivided attention, so make the most of it! Let your fingers linger on each part of her little body as you wash her. Your loving touch and attention will show her that you care.

  • Carry on a one-way conversation. Did you know that your baby can recognize your voice from her time in your belly? It’s true! Although she can’t understand what you’re saying yet, your tone and voice will fascinate her. Be descriptive; tell her what you’re doing, and use lots of adjectives. (“Mommy’s going to bring you that doll with the black and white polka dots. Remember him? So cute!”)

  • Rock her in your arms. The back-and-forth motion will remind her of being in the womb. You might also dance with her as you hold her, or sway softly to music together. Your reassuring touch and the lulling motion will put her at ease and soothe her if she starts to become fussy.

  • Connect at bedtime by singing and reading. Take advantage of the quiet time before baby falls asleep. Whether you sing a soft lullaby (your baby won’t care if you’re off-key!) or read her a book (even though she won’t understand the story), your baby will find comfort in your familiar voice and the rhythm of your speech as she drifts off.

"I have been using this since I was a little girl (and a baby according to my Mom) and I can't imagine using anything else. I am now 39 and continue to use this product...for myself! "
