Getting through the first week of your baby’s life can be stressful for sure, but it can also be one of the most joyous times in your life. As long as you prepare yourself by stocking up on new baby products and take the time to do some mental preparation as well, you’ll be sure to get through the first week of your baby’s life with flying colors!
Understanding Your Baby’s Cries
With a newborn in your home, you’re going to have to deal with some tears. Babies tend to cry a lot in the first few weeks of their lives, and most of the time that’s simply because they don’t have another way to communicate. Although it might all seem baffling to you at first, over time you will get to know your baby’s cry and you’ll soon be able to differentiate them. Don’t let yourself get upset if in the first week you can’t seem to pinpoint why baby is crying. Just do your best to soothe baby as much as you can during these first few days. Make sure that you buy some warm blankets for swaddling when you’re shopping for new baby products, as this is one of the top ways that you can make your baby feel secure and loved, which may decrease the crying.
Don’t Say No to Help
With a new baby in your home, your list of things to do is going to get pretty long. One of the best things that you can do for you and baby is to ask for and accept help from your friends and loved ones. If someone in your family or circle of friends offers to give you a helping hand, you should take it. Even if it’s as simple as running to the store to get you some of the new baby products you forgot to pick up, it can give you a much needed break and some time to relax.
Make Time for Bonding
Even though you’re probably going to be exhausted for the first week after your baby’s arrival, you should make the effort to develop a bond with your little one. This bond is something that you might feel instantaneously, but that doesn’t mean it won’t take some nurturing. You should always try to find a few quiet moments where you can just enjoy the presence of your baby’s company. You can do this before bedtime by cuddling or holding baby close. Also, you can pick up some baby lotion when you’re shopping for new baby products and use baby massages as a way to bond with your little one. The more skin-to-skin contact you can achieve, the better chance you’ll have of increasing your bond with baby.
