Diaper changing can be a messy ordeal, especially if you don’t have a lot of control over your squirming, wriggling little one. If you want to make sure that your baby’s diaper changes go smoothly and that you don’t end up creating a giant mess, it’s a good idea to try some table changing distractions during diaper changes. If you can get your baby to focus on something else for a while, then you’ll have a much easier time getting rid of baby’s old diaper, applying baby lotion or ointment to baby’s skin, and putting on a fresh diaper.
Give Baby Something to Hold
One of the most tried and true methods for distracting baby during diaper changes is giving him or her something to hold. If you can divert your little one’s attention for just a few minutes, that should be enough time for you to get the diaper changed without worrying about your baby knocking over the baby lotion or other supplies. What you give your infant to play with during a diaper change will depend on how old he or she is. In most cases, a soft toy that’s too large for baby to swallow should do the trick. If your baby is a newborn, you may want to try hanging a mobile over the changing table to serve as a distraction.
Pump Up the Jams
Another really great changing table distraction is music. If you don’t have a radio or an iPod setup in your nursery, then now is a great time to get one. Music is really calming to most babies, and it’s a great way to get fussy babies to relax and be still while you change their diapers. And remember that you don’t always have to play slow, calming music. Some babies will like faster, happier tunes, and it can be great fun for you to sing along with it. Your baby will be so happy that you’ll have nothing to worry about as you get rid of that stinky diaper and use baby lotion to keep your little one’s bottom nice and fresh.
Get Baby to Participate
When your baby starts to get older and can easily hold things, it’s a good idea to get him or her to participate in the diaper changing process. That way, your baby will feel like he or she is really helping and will be less likely to throw a fit or cause a fuss. As you’re changing your little one’s diaper, ask him or her to hand you the baby wipes or baby lotion. Working together will be so much fun for you and baby, and it will definitely make diaper changing time go by faster.
