As most new parents know, babies can sometimes be a blur of activity, especially when they start crawling and moving around on their own. While lots of activity is good for your baby’s development, it’s also important to slow things down sometimes. Time spent relaxing and taking in new information and surroundings can also be developmentally beneficial for your baby, and that’s why it’s important for you to encourage downtime for your little one. Downtime can be as simple as giving your baby a massage with baby lotion or giving baby some extra time in the crib before bedtime.
Slow Down with Baby Massage
Although a baby massage with baby lotion can still be stimulating to your little angel, it’s a lot different than the stimulation your baby will get from playing with toys and being active throughout the day. Making time for a baby massage gives your baby a chance to rest and block out all of the other distractions of the world. Make sure that you turn the lights down low and turn off televisions and radios before you start. A quiet, comfortable space will help your baby feel more at ease during the massage, and you’ll both be glad for the time away from everything else.
Give Baby Some Crib Time
After a long day of playing and generally being active, your baby is likely to get cranky and tired, but he or she may not want to go to bed right away. In these cases, you may want to consider putting your baby down for the night anyway after you’ve given a massage with baby lotion and putting his or her mobile on. Some quiet time alone in the crib will allow your baby to unwind at the end of the day. Just make sure that you’re not giving your baby too much downtime at night before bed, as it could cause sleep issues. If your baby starts to cry or moan in the crib, it may be a good indication that you’ve given him or her too much alone time in the crib.
Give Yourself Some Downtime
When you decide to give your baby some downtime, it will be the perfect time for you to relax and unwind as well. Taking care of a baby is a full-time job in itself, not to mention the fact that many moms work as well. After so much activity, you too deserve a bit of downtime. When your baby is playing quietly in his or her crib or playpen, give yourself some time to focus on you. Just sit back for a while and rest or give yourself a quick massage with baby lotion, and you’ll be recharged in no time.
