Using Baby Oil to Calm Down Your Newborn

Newborns can often get cranky and fussy. Sometimes it’s because they are hungry or in need of a diaper change, but sometimes it’s hard to tell what is making your newborn so upset. Regardless of the reason for your baby’s upset state, it’s important for you to learn ways to help calm him or her down. One of the best things that you can do is use a little baby oil on his or her skin. Touching your baby while applying the oil will make him or her feel protected, and all of these upset feelings will melt away.

Using Oil after Bath Time

If your child is upset, a nice warm bath may be a great way to help him or her feel a bit calmer. In addition to bathing your little one, you should consider using some baby oil on their skin once the bath is over. Not only will this moisturize and protect your newborn’s skin, but it will also help soothe your baby to feel your protective and loving hands on his or her skin. Make sure that you use gentle strokes when you apply the oil, and your child will be calm in no time.

Help Baby to Sleep

Sometimes, babies need to be calmed down before bedtime. This is especially the case when they’ve had a long day filled with travel or play dates. If your child is cranky or fussy near bed time, it’s a good idea for you to use some oil and give your little one a massage. A baby massage is crucial to calm your infant down and will help get him or her in a better mood to sleep. The skin-to-skin contact during the massage will help your infant feel comforted and loved, and this feeling of security will make sure that he or she is calm enough to rest.

Treating Cradle Cap

Cradle cap is a skin condition that is very common in newborns. Although this condition is generally mild and only causes flaky, dry skin on the scalp similar to dandruff, it can sometimes be more severe and cause your young one to be fussy. Bad cases of cradle cap can lead to thick, yellowish, crusty patches of skin. If you want to remove these patches and make sure that your child stays calm and comfortable, you can rub a small amount baby oil on your little one’s scalp and then easily comb them away.
