Holding your baby for the first time is a truly magical moment where you can establish a bond that will last a lifetime. Your new child is both precious and delicate, so you’re going to need to take great care when holding your little one. Holding your baby correctly at bathtime is especially important, and new mommies should brush up on some bathtime basics before giving their newborn a bath. With proper holding techniques and wonderful baby bath products, bath time can be one of the most intimate experiences you share with your baby.
Holding During Bathtime
Bath time can be a lot of fun for you and baby, but you need to exercise great care, especially if you are bathing a newborn. With newborns, it’s best to give them sponge baths for a few weeks. As you do this, make sure you’re supporting your infant’s head the whole time. Newborns won’t be able to hold their heads up, so you’ll need to support them at all times.

Tip:  Place your infant on a towel on the bed and use a small tub of water to dip a soft washcloth and wash baby.  It is a good idea to cover the baby with a towel and keep the diaper on until you are ready to change the diaper and wash that particular area.

After a few weeks you can start to bathe her in a basin in the sink or a small plastic tub.

Once your baby can hold his or her head up, then you’ll be able to use a larger bathtub. This can give you a lot more freedom to have some playtime during bath time. Keep in mind, though, that you should never take your hand off your child while he or she is in the bath. While you reach for baby bath products, your baby could easily slip underwater, so you’ll need to keep at least one hand on your infant at all times.

One of the most important bathtime basics to remember is that you should try to give your baby a bath when your partner or someone else is around. Babies sometimes like to move around a lot, and it can be difficult to deal with their squirming while continuing to hold them correctly. If your partner or another loved one is around, he or she can help you by handing you the right baby bath products when you need them.

Always Stay Relaxed

Another of the most important bathtime basics is to relax when you are holding your newborn. Babies can sense if an adult feels scared or nervous, and this may cause them to wriggle while you are holding them. If you keep calm from the start and speak soothing words to your infant as you hold him or her in the bath, your baby is going to stay relaxed and bath time will be lots of fun.
